How to keep your Child away from Junk Foods

Let’s admit it, junk foods are best friends of our children because they are very attractive even to us adults. Although we all know that junk foods will not make our children healthy, we are still finding it difficult to avoid them. They are almost everywhere from television commercials, print ads and groceries. However, it is our duty as parents to think of effective ways and I believe that we must follow them religiously.

Start at home

The best time to start to teach your child is when he starts to eat. Introduce to him healthy foods like yogurt until his taste get used to it. Always display a set of fruits on your table so that he will be more familiar with them. Similarly, it will be more difficult for you to keep your child away from junk food if you buy them secretly and eat them at night. No matter how you hide it, your children will still learn about it. There is nothing better than being a good example.

Information and preparation

Some parents think that junk foods are only the ones with artificial colors and attractive package which can be bought from groceries. Remember that any food that is not healthy can be called junk food. This includes oily foods, too much sweets, and salty snacks. We must be aware of what we cook for him. Read informative materials so that you can have a plan on what to serve next, and prepare them attractively. Healthy foods need not be boring to eat. Use your artistic instinct.

No excuses

Be the master of your house, not your child. Do not get carried away by your child’s charming smile. If you allow him once, expect it to be twice and so on and so forth. Never give him junk food as a reward for the good things he achieved. If you are outside and celebrating a certain occasion, look for a healthy restaurant. More so, never use it as a bribe if he does not want to study his lessons. From the very start, your child must know who the boss is.

Educate him, not scare him

The more you scare your child, the more he will get curious. Power and authority does not mean our child should hear nothing but shouts and scary stories. Your child needs to know and understand the effect of junk foods to his body. Tell him what vegetables are for, how meat can make him strong and why fresh fruits are better than sweet candies. A visible food chart can definitely help a lot. It is better if you will put it in his room and near his bed.

Giving healthy foods is not a choice, it is a must.

Unfortunately, it isn’t my son that I am worried about - I love junk food and he is on my back about it all the time. I can’t even get an ice cream cone without him menacing me about!
