How to keep a Marriage Happy even after years has gone by

Newly weds are the happiest couple of the day as friends and relatives keep greeting them and giving gifts. But as years are passing by, some marriages turn dry and sometimes without a specific reason. Not that that the feeling is gone, but because they are too busy with other things like work and parenting. Just like the rose needs water and sunshine to maintain its beauty, marriage also needs maintenance. Here are some of my ideas that you may find useful.

Keep the romance

I cannot forget what my father told me on my wedding day. He said – Your wife will always be your former girlfriend. Do not think that romance is only for young couples and do not mind if your children will think that you are weird. Romance is for all the people who are deeply in love. But do not be confused as romance is totally different from making love. With romance, you do not need to plan or even look good. Words are more than enough as long as it is being spoken sincerely. Smiling every time you talk is very helpful, too.

Have an open communication

Open communication means saying what you want to say and ask what you want to ask, no assumption. There is no better way than to be honest. The more you keep your silence, the more uncomfortable you will be. However, timing is also important. Do not talk about your pending bills while enjoying a good lunch. Avoid using the phone if you are talking about critical issues such as how to discipline the kids. If you have suggestions, bring it up with a valid reason and not just what you want.

Maintain a healthy fight

There will always be some misunderstanding which can lead to petty fights, and this is natural for two different people living in one roof. The rules are simple. If you are wrong, admit it and say sorry. If you are right, you do not need to push yourself. If you are not sure who is right, why not meet in the middle? Although there is a saying that you should not sleep until the issue is being settled, I believe it is better if you sleep first before settling a hot issue to avoid unhealthy fights. Rest calms one’s mind and body.

Dedicate a time for each other

Do not use children as an excuse for not having quality time with each other. You can always require them to sleep early or allow them to play in your backyard. Never bring your work home as it will not really make you feel at home. Although you can mention about it when you are together, do it for the sake of conversation alone. If you do not want to spend for the movies, watching your favorite TV show while lying on the bed is fine. Your spouse deserves your time and affection.

All marriages started in heaven; but couples decide where it will end.

It takes a lot of work to keep a marriage healthy and strong. With kids and everyday work commitments it can be difficult to find time/space for each other but I belief if both parties work hard there is definitely a way to keep the romance growing and relationship steady.
