A Salute to all Filipino Bloggers

Image from Philippine Central

Philippines may be a third-world country, with a lot of natives going abroad to seek for a greener pasture and where corruption is a common topic in every table. But Filipinos are born with great talents and they can shine anywhere, given the chance.

I do not need to mention the names of Manny Pacquiao and Charice Pempengco, who are now doing very well in their respective fields. But these two are just among the millions of great Filipinos who are doing their best for their country and families.

Filipinos are also known to be sociable and hospitable, and blogging is another field where we can prove that we are. In case some of you are not aware, John Chow is very thankful to the 13-year old Kid Blogger Carl Ocab for saving him through a guest post. But this is not just about him; this post is a salute to all the Filipino bloggers in every corner of the world.

As I traced back as to when blogging started here in the Philippines, I found an article from Manila Bulletin Online entitled How Blogging Started in the Philippines which was published on March 29, 2005. Here, Analyn Jusay learned that the first Filipino blogger is Lauren Dado who has been blogging since 1996. The following year, Analyn pubilshed another article - Revisiting The First Pinoy Blogger this time with an interview with her.

On September 17, 1999, Digital Filipino was created by Ms. Janette Toral to assist people with thier e-commerce needs. Last Nov. 5, 2008, awards were given to top Filipino bloggers according to different categories in which you will find the complete list of winners here. The D Spot won the Personal Blog Category, while Tech at Hand dot Net won the Professional Blog Category.

Furthermore, you can find the complete list of the top 100 Filipino bloggers at Ratified dot Org. This is according to Technorati, Alexa Rank and number of subscribers. If you are a Filipino, you can also submit your blog there.

On the other hand, The Philippine Blog Awards also announced its set of winners for this year 2008 in which the complete list can be found at the Manila Blog Times. Tonyo Cruz whom I met at the recent blog event I attended, banged the The Best News and Media Blog.

The Philippine Blog Awards however, is being organized by Abe Olandres, Gail de la Cruz - Villanueva and Jayvee Fernandez which started in the latter part of 2006.

But I cannot end this post without mentioning some Filipino bloggers who I met online and offline. Some of them may not be on the top list, or has a topic or language that you will not like. But these are real people, sincere with their posts, and write what’s in their hearts.

So, without further ado, here they are in no particular order.

Fatherlyours - Legend?! Para namang si FPJ yun e. Pero ok lang, idol ko naman siya e…lol!

JunithMalot - I just started following your husband’s blog, and I really find it useful and interesting. Welcome po kahit sino dito, medyo kailangan ko lang po medyo may konting “getting-to-know-each-other”.

Reynz - i really choose that set of flags to remind us our history.

Juler - As I have mentioned on the post, this is not for the “sikat” only. This is for all Pinoy blogs that looks interesting to me. I just need to select carefully. But again, the list is for all.

I maybe someone who is not proud of my blog but definitely I am proud to be a pinoy.

Keep writing/blogging. We need your breed. You are outstanding.

Pag nagawi ka ng manila. email me. I will treat you. :)

  • Angel Cuala posted: 08 Nov at 10:45 am

Ada - I am more honored than all of you, to accept me here is more than just an honor. Getting famous?! I almost fell on my chair! Seriously speaking, I maybe 42 and sometimes forgot some things but knowing who I am and where I came from are the things I will never forget, kahit magka-amnesia pa ako.

Dexter - Guess what? I would love you more if you don’t call me sir, but Angel instead. Although I appreciate your respect, but I believe that in the world of blogging all of us are equal. Sabihin na lang natin na “nauna lang ako pinanganak” lol!

JoanJoyce - You will never be out of the list. I wish you would still remember me during my Entrecard days when I was still using Guardian Angel as my pen name.

Gary - I really think you should be proud of your blog. I am very keen in collecting blogs, and I will not add your blog here if it is not interesting. Believe me, your blog is good. Actually, I am a full-blooded Manila Boy and I literally worked on the streets of Manila for years. You can find my interviews on my Who if Father Blogger? page, but I prefer to raise my family here in Malvar, Batangas. I am not really fond of going back, but I pay a visit a few times. Teka, saan mo ako ililibre? Baka naman sa Quezon Ave ha? lol! Thanks for finding me outstanding. I really appreciate that.

Yan - I did not expect a non-Filipino blogger to drop by here, and share his own salute. I am glad you find my countrymen interesting. I really appreciate your presence. And yes, we’re proud to be Pinoy (a slang word for Filipino, that is)

ManuelV- Opo, wala ng sir-sir, promise! Thanks for all the kindness and tips.

Janette - It’s through your event that opened a window for me to meet fellow Pinoy bloggers in person, and I am very thankful for that. But most of all, thank you for the effort and hard work you are exerting to unite all of us. This is NOT an easy job, I know. Rest assured that I will do my best to help and support our “kababayans” to the best I can.

PS. Again, thanks to all who appreciated this post, and spend time to leave such heartwarming comments. And thanks for welcoming me here in the Pinoy blogosphere.

Thanks you very much for including me on your list Angel. That’s very kind and generous of you.

Pinoys are turning out to be very good in blogging, perhaps because of their innate talent in expressing themselves be it in English or in the native language. I’m sure it will evolve into more productive and enjoyable ways for all of us.

Good luck Angel and more power!

  • durano lawayan posted: 11 Nov at 1:59 pm

    Hi Angel,

This is a worthwhile effort and I congratulate you for initiating it. There are a lot of Filipino bloggers from within the country and from all over the world. If these politicians we have are truly intelligent, they should reach out and harness this tremendous potential. Barack Obama did just that by galvanizing a previously uninvolved and cynical youthful generation, using a medium that occupies the majority of their time and interest, in a world where they find acceptance and support for who and what they are and what they can become, with an inspiring message that drew them in droves to support his candidacy. He is the first geeky president the world ever had, and politics as the US had gotten used to will be changed by this triumph.

There is no difference between these youthful Americans and our own Filipino bloggers. There are plenty out there that are finding themselves and their talents, some are confident, some are audacious, some are daring, some need more guidance and direction to see themselves and their capabilities in clearer light. But they have one thing in common, a need to reach out and express their true selves whether under their true identities or under assumed names.

There are those I encountered who can be said to write some fiction about themselves to seek safety for their insecure personalities, but they soon reveal themselves through the inconsistencies in their character after several posts, by reading their ideas and reactions to events and situations and people of different persuasions. Most are very intelligent but somehow are cowed by their actual environments; and even in this digital environment tend to be overly secretive and cautious. They try to reinvent themselves but cannot, because the new self cannot be produced unless the real former self is accepted. This is what I try to do for most at times. It’s good there is such a venue as this which we didn’t have when I was younger.

Your efforts and those of others like you are commendable. The Cebu blogger is another helpful site, same with Gewgaw, and Batangueno and Itot. Joan Joyce is awesome in readership, same with Manilenya. I have some of them on my blogroll as I hover and lurk on their sites every now and then. These sites have symbiotic relationships whether they realize it or not. This is an old practice that is disappearing with the so called “modernity” and “urbanization”. I like seeing it in the blogosphere and especially among the younger generation. I just hope it translates into the actual world for them and the coming generations. It is an ennobling and unifying factor based on trust, respect, tolerance, generosity, selflessness and brotherhood. Everything that was beautiful about our people and should be re-energized for the future. The values we used to have were trampled by our politicians and pseudo leaders. Let’s hope a new type of leader will emerge for our country. I wouldn’t be surprised if that young man or woman, if and when the time comes, is a blogger. :-) –Durano, done!
