How to Avoid your Subscribers to Unsubscribe to your Blog
RSS Icon credit to Smashing Magazine
It is a fact that subscribers will help your blog to stay alive. This is because they are your regular readers and it takes a lot of hard work increase them even if you using the most attractive RSS Icon in town.
But the worst thing that can happen is that they are getting few, and you cannot force them to stay. One thing is for sure, you are doing some things that your subscribers do not like. As a blog subscriber myself, here are some of the main factors that stops me from subscribing.
Long and boring posts
While it is alright to write long posts, they should not be boring. On the contrary, they must be more interesting as they are reading it. This is where your creativity comes in. If you want to write long posts, learn how to minimize grammatical errors and avoid useless words and phrases. Be straight in what you want to say. If you think you have many things to say about a single topic, make a series part and inform your readers about it.
Inconsistent posting frequency
If you choose a particular blogging frequency say every other day, be sure you can maintain of at least close to it. Remember that subscribers are followers and if you make them impatient for your next blog post, then they will leave without saying goodbye. Sudden increase of blog frequency can also be annoying especially if they do not open their mails everyday. Consistency is one thing readers like from us.
Repetitive post topics
Making blog posts are not like submitting articles to different article directories. It is not like a good movie that people want to see again and again. If you want to talk about an old topic, be sure to make it more interesting to read than the first and provide a reasonable time gap. Adding some new ideas about it or updating your readers about the topic can be very interesting to follow. Fragrant flowers can also cause allergy.
Sudden change of blog topic
Remember that blogging is sharing quality information, and abrupt change of blog topic may offend your loyal readers. If you want to make an experiment by making an off-topic post, inform your readers beforehand and how frequent you will do this. Readers subscribe to a blog because you have common interest in topics to read. If you suddenly change your interest, they might also change their mind.
Successive product reviews
Engaging into paid-to-write sites like SponsoredReviews can provide you additional income but can also harm your subscribers. They are after what you can share to them, not what they can buy through your advice. If they are interested in buying something, they will go to a more appropriate site. If you want to earn more while saving your subscribers, balance your paid posts and find other sources of income.
Frequent feed errors
Make sure that you are using a reliable feed source. Most used feed sources do not mean it is always effective. They encounter technical problems too. Monitor their performance very closely and a good way of doing it is to subscribe to your blog. In this way, you can also experience the same feelings your subscribers feel. At any rate, full RSS feed is better than partial feed or just title feeds. If multiple errors are happening, report them at once.
Loyalty pays off only when you know how to handle it.

Successive product reviews
Before I thought Paid Reviews will really boost my Make money online Saga.. Well actually I get it from Johnchow. But in the long run, it will not because Google will definitely see it and will remove all your visitors coming from them.
My Focus now is to be known in my niche and attract Advertiser who will agree to have no-follow in the links.
Since Direct Advertiser pays better. And ofcourse Adsense
BTW it is a great post
Angel Cuala posted: 09 Nov at 2:20 pm
Dexter - I have done a series of paid posts on my blogspot blogs before, and I earned some few bucks and maintained my PR3. About Goggle removing visitors from blogs with paid posts, I think the big G only do this to blogs with a do-follow tag. I have been reading about this and asked SP members, and I plan to make a post about it soon. I think this will be a good discussion.
But yes, Direct Advertiser is better. Adsense? I still have yet to prove that.
Thanks for dropping by.

And you are right if your post has no-follow it will not be a problem for Google { or you can make it no-index} , But most of the paid post required do-follow. Big G hate paid post that aim to link build..
I have been doing paid post for a year.. I incerease my page views a lot but after Google found what I am doing .. A bomb has been dropped at my site..
And it is good it is now regaining the visitors

Daz rightz. Or that competition is heavy and they’re doing it far better that you do. Or that you give your readers a lot of restrictions it feels like martial law on your site. The more unfriendly the atmosphere is (everything that you wrote in bullets), the more likely they won’t come back.
ManuelV posted: 09 Nov at 5:30 pm
Angel, have you tried placing AdSense ads in different parts of your webpage?
bloggista posted: 09 Nov at 9:54 pm
If you are really bent on building your blog’s ranking, esp with Google, then avoid paid posts. Yeah, direct advertising is a lot better. Aside from they pay higher (I have direct advertisers who pay more than a hundred dollars vs. 5 to 20 dollars in paid post sites), they are also okay with no-follow.
Just be careful in choosing which advertiser you approve - and avoid those advertisers/sites na mainit sa mga mata ni kuya G.
As to your tips - I am guilty to all of them. Hehehe… Will keep these in mind.

Dexter - I suppose that bomb hurt you somehow, but I am glad you are now winning your visitors again. Good luck!
Reynz - I love the term “Martial Law”. And yes, a clear atmosphere is a good idea.
ManuelV - Yes, I tried that before but I’ll try to make a different approach soon. Thanks for the concern.
Bloggista - Advertiser and paid posts seem to be choosing the lesser evil. Well, I am an Angel so let’s see if they can win against me lol! Kidding aside, the tips above are only my point of views and experience. But if a blogger can think of other ways to maintain his subscribers, then that will be nice.

I agree. Long post could be boring especially when you are talking about an old topic. People are sometimes visual, so to add spice and interest to article, inclusion of photos or videos on your post is much better. Readers usually unsubscribe because they don’t wanna see that all their emails are from you. So consistency and regularity of your post is important.

Personally I’d subscribe to a blog if the contents are useful to me and enjoyable to read, and it’s the same reason I’m making every possible effort to give the same kind of information to my audience. Awesome tips.

I was concerned with my blogs low rss readership but now I cant be bothered chasing figures. I rather stress on earning $$ through it via different sources. I have tried paid post and the worst one is PPP and others that require you to put a disclosure button below. The payment was not that good also.
I rather go with direct advertising.
I agree with Yan that most people, including me, will subscribe to blogs if their content is useful and interesting.

statistics for me is a bonus but i need cash, LOL! Doing paid post isn’t bad as long as you are not too concern over PR (but yes most of the advertisers are concerned about that and thats why it becomes a prob to paid post bloggers) and rankings. Getting a rank is somewhat a guessing game lately because rules change and what you do the last time isn’t applicable lately. Some do not post that good and informative and some do not post at all for months but get a higher PR but some who has quality blog and post gets none.
For me whether it increased or decreased as long as I love what I am doing and still gets the traffic I need (for adsense), then go sago.. hehehe..
sorry mahaba kabore ba?

there was a day that my readers count reached 53, from 20something the previous day. I didn’t really believe it. And the next the day, it went back to its normal level. What was it? Gaining 30 and losing them all in a single day?
Many months ago, i read Problogger’s post on the 34 reasons why readers unsubscribe. Though I was excited about the increasing number in my reader’s count widget, i decided it will not matter at all to me. I prefer actual blog visit (the page impression, the traffic), as I too, don’t open my feed reader often.

Hi Angel ~ Great information … I feel I am long-winded sometimes … so I try to go back and see if something I’ve written needs to be broken down. I struggle a bit with the change in blog topic … I’m not sure if I’ve found my “niche” with my blog just yet. It started out as a personal blog for friends and family … I started blogging about the money I was making online and how and what I was doing … I started branding it as a Money Making Ideas blog … it seems I was drawn towards blogging topics … and now that I’m promoting so heavily for the Blogging Idol … I have a whole new audience of “new to the internet” type … so I’m back to Money Making Ideas of all kinds so that I don’t go over their head with blogging topics and I don’t want to bore my existing readers with such basic topics … so I will try to up my posting frequency and put both there. *sigh* I will find my true niche here soon … Thanks for the thought-provoking post for me. *huGs* Suzanne
P.S. I love your signature … how did you do that?

After reading this blog, I’m quite concerned about my feedburner now as I still haven’t fixed it. I guess this is a hindrance in my blog to be efficiently ‘exposed’ since my RSS feed is not working.
Angel Cuala posted: 10 Nov at 1:18 pm
Ambo - Adding photos and images is something that I always do, and I used a video once. For me, this is an added attraction for the readers.
Yan - I am glad we have the same point of view about contents. This is the most important thing for me as a blogger, and as a subcriber.
Dominique - I think $$ is the goal of all of us, but subscribers play a very vital role. For me, they are not only to attract more advertisers, but also a proof that we are doing something interesting.
JoanJoyce - Yes, money comes from traffic but sometimes it’s good to know where you are strong and weak. This way, we can think of ways to improve more.
Ceblogger / Snow - As I have mentioned, they sometimes encounter technical problems too. The best is contact them, or ask bloggers who can help you. Traffic is much important than subscribers, but the latter plays a vital role. Believe me, it is.
Suzanne - I left a comment to your post about the Blogging Idol contest, and I can tell you honestly that you have a good fight. By the way, you can click on my signature and you will be directed to the site where I got it. And no worries about misspelling my name, you are nth person who made the same mistake. Thanks for subscribing. Good luck!

Reynz - Naks naman! Coming from a queen like you is just so inspiring. I really appreciate it. But actually, I have been blogging since last year using blogspot blogs. Medyo walang masyado pumapansin sa lolo mo e….lol! Anyway, parang baliktad ata, ako dapat ang maki-pag social climbing sa iyo. Ikaw na ang nasa dyaryo!
Snow - You’re very much welcome. It’s my pleasure to know that I have helped someone somehow.

Ya. That’s very true. All those tips are very important. However, using the cute little fox is smart! Sudden change in blog topic and inconsistent post frequency used to be one of my biggest mistakes in other posts. I lose lots of subscribers back then.

I noticed you’re using that magic Angel and i love the photos you include on your posts!
@Snow contact me if you need help about feedburner. I could help you on that matter.
