Understanding the Powers of Effective Parenting

About ten hours ago, I attended a free tele-seminar covering the topic Holiday Stress | All Ages courtesy of Susan Epstein. This is the first time that I attended an online seminar, so I am very excited to share it with you.

Anyway, Susan invited her audience to ask questions relating to parenting especially this coming Christmas season. We all know that we will be busy these days, and attention to our children may be greatly affected.

Meet Susan Epstein

I discovered her site through Dominique’s Desk and I am glad I did. I was enchanted with the title – Parenting Powers. I learned that she is a Parent and Family Coach who has been helping families through series of seminars and coaching. She worked for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, and completed training in 2003 with the internationally accredited Coaches Training Institute. . She is also an author of parenting books like Are you tired of Nagging? and Taking Back Your Parenting Powers System, in which I already placed an order. I will make a book review as soon as I receive it. You can also read a lot more about her at Parenting Powers.

Why we need parenting powers

There are no perfect parents, and there will never be. I may be discussing a lot of parenting tips here on my blog, but I have my own problems too. I believe that parenting is a continuous learning process. Every day is a challenging day, and every problem may have different solutions. Unfortunately, some parents are using the wrong approach. This is why I am still reading a lot of materials. But there are other ways to learn more like asking from parents, good friends and even from professionals. In any case, we must learn the art of parenting powers. Parenting is a hard task, and can be harder if we will not learn to act like one.

What I learned from Susan Epstein so far

During the tele-seminar, Susan keeps on reminding parents to be calm. She understands that some children may be harsh, answering back, and stubborn. But the bottom line will always be about us, and how we react on different situations. It takes to two to make a quarrel, and doing it with our children is the worst scene we can create. According to her, parents have the authority to insist the house rules but do not necessarily mean that they need to be sarcastic. Controlling a difficult situation require parents to be firm, but reasonable. Shouting and hurting our child are out of the question, as there are better and more effective kinds of reprimands.

The biggest problem of parents is they think they already know everything.

I think the key to parenting is Patience. Children will always be naughty, noisy and can be stubborn kids. But its what you show them as an example that will make them realize which ones are bad and which ones are good.

The challenge therefore is as a parent, you should be a role model to your children. And no exceptions to the rule. One time my 5 year old son saw me eating my sandwich in front of the computer – he looked at me sharply and told me, “Dad, you’re eating while working on the computer, it’s bad and you’re dropping tiny bits of food on the keyboard.” I told him why you think its bad, and he said, because you told me so, and yeah, the ants will troop around the keyboard.”

Its hard to be a parent, esp a good parent. You got to live by your words – because children are keen observers.

I agree with bloggista. As of for me, I have 5 kids and each one had different personality. I always wanted them to see me not only as a father but a friend whom they can call whenever they have problems. I may not also be a perfect father but as you said in that post. Parenting is a continuous learning process.

online seminar, wow, sounds fun! about parenting, i think i’m fortunate to have parents who value education and love us with all their hearts. when i get to have my own kids in due time, i’ll use the parenting style of my parents and like you, i will continue to learn about parenting in this modern world by reading books and participating in online/offline seminars. hehe. :)

Patience and a clear and calm mind is essential for dealing with kids. Through experience I realized that if we are rash/ harsh or react strongly towards the kids misbehaviour they will repel even harder and make it more difficult to discipline them.

Thanks for the mention about my site. :)

  • I am so excited to be reaching parents all over the world. Thank you, Angel for your kind words and incredible support in helping me help as many parents as possible!

Bloggista – Yes, patience is the key but I believe this is the hardest part. Humans are prone to lose their patience anytime, that’s why we need to learn more on how to control our anger.

Mon – Having 5 kids with them growing useful citizens is a great achievement. I have to salute to you with that.

Edelweiza – I am looking for more tele-webinar and I will make an invitational post if I found one.

Dominique – It’s me who must thank you, as I found a good site that I think can help me.

Susan – It’ s a great pleasure to have you here. Rest assured that I will continue helping fellow parents, and through your book I know I can do so much.
