Making Money from Adsense: Gain or Pain?
Obviously, I have Adsense on my blog. I started this blog four months ago, but I have 2 other blogs at Blogger that also have Adsense, and are more than one year old. However, I now seldom touch them since I am more focused on this blog.
But here’s the great news – I am now about to reach my first $100 from Adsense after more than 1 year of using it! Am I happy? Of course, I am. I worked for it somehow. But what am I driving at? Well, I think now is the right time for me to share my ideas about Adsense. So I hope you join me here, and let’s talk about it professionally.
Making good money from Adsense
It is given that a high-traffic blog has the greater chance of making good money from Adsense. Targeting the most searched keywords, and make series of posts about it is a very effective way. Adsense bloggers earned a lot from the recent US President election, and will earn again if they are blogging about the upcoming Pacquiao - De la Hoya fight. Therefore, I can conclude that niche bloggers are more likely not to make good money from Adsense consistently.
The pain of optimizing Adsense
Check the screenshot of the blog on the left. For sure, the blogger is making good money which may be a wonderful idea. However, there will be readers who might be annoyed with the scattered ads, plus the fact that they should scroll down the page before they can read the post. Although the content may be useful, they will most likely leave the blog unless the reader is a sincere follower of the topic. Therefore, optimizing Adsense is just like any Make Money Online scheme that involves risk.
Why top bloggers are not using Adsense
Manuel Viloria was kind enough to inform me about this - Steve Pavlina dropped Adsense and will lose $100K annually. The guy is crazy for doing so, you might think. But check other top bloggers like Yaro Starak. None of them have Adsense on their blogs. They may have different reasons of not having so, but I can assume that protecting their image is one of them. They have chosen other ways to make good money online. In fact, they are even supporting each others products and services.
My conclusion Making good money from Adsense is a choice. If you choose it, focus on it. Do everything you can to earn from it. Enjoy the profit but do not forget about the risk. There will always be powerful keywords to choose from, but they come and go. Some bloggers are being banned by Google for fraud clicks which they claim innocence. But still, we got to live with that. To sum it up, I am neither suggesting you to use Adsense, nor to stay away from it. But rather looking at things on different angles. How about you? What’s your thoughts about Adsense? A strategy can only be effective if we are prepared to deal with its ineffectiveness.

the screenshot looks familiar.
That ad positioning gives me the highest CTR, and I don’t mind losing some readers in exchange of higher earnings. Hehehe. People come and go, but if you write quality blog posts that are beneficial to your readers, no matter how annoying your ads are, they will come back for more.
and as for making money in Adsense, it really takes a lot of patience to start earning your first $100. like what i’ve said on that post you linked to, it’s not for everybody. it’s not for someone who’s not willing to work their a$$ out to get more visitors. But if you’re willing to optimize your posts and work hard to get more visitors, then, the gain you’ll get is worth more than the pain.

There are many ways of making money online, and online advertising (i.e., AdSense) is just one of them. There are places where AdSense can be more profitable than Affiliate Marketing, and vice-versa. Some people prefer to create products and make money via direct selling.
In the end, it depends on what you want to do online.

Four months and almost on your first $100 from Adsense? Congrats. I have been blogging for almost a year and I recently passed $10 last month. Kawawa naman me. But I am learning.

No question about it, micro niche sites are better off with adsense while for those in blogging or MMo niches, adsense isn’t converting much. Image aside, I figure top bloggers are making more money from their own products than adsense.

Wow, congrats on your first $100 after 4 months! I tend to stay away from blogs with annoying ads, but sometimes when the content is worth it, I come back anyway. So I personally think you are right, positioning of google ads has its risks.

Marhgil - Yes, I am expecting you will notice it, lol! And I agree, Adsense is not everybody. It’s a choice.
ManuelV - Absolutely. That’s why my post title ends with a question. Again, thanks for the information about Steve Pavlina.
To the others - I am very sorry that I confused you. I am using Adsense for more than a year, and not 4 months. I already edit that portion to avoid further confusion. Thanks!

at first glance, i know whose blog it is on the snapshot. it got a very simple design yet very effective on SEO and adsense.
my adsense earnings is also nearing $100. i think i have to focus more on lasting posts.

Earning your first 100 is tough - but once you’ve crossed the line, you’ll be surprised almost every month, you’ll be receiving money from Google.
I guess if one is really into adsense, you have to place those in prominent places. Again, its a matter of personal choice really if you want to earn lots from adsense, then work for it, do SEO stuff, or even build a site optimized for adsense.

First of all, congrats on your first GA paycheck. Surely, the next one will come easier and much faster.
Anyway, from my observation, there are two basic blogging income models - the advertising model and the marketing model.
The Advertising model is getting paid for ads - private, text links and contextual. Income is directly proportional to organic visitors, traffic and ad optimization.
The Marketing model is getting paid for affiliate commissions and product and service sales. Income is directly proportional to blogger authority and both online and offline marketing.
There is no better income model, both have been proven to be highly profitable. Moreover, I’ve seen a few who have become successful in using a combination of the two in one blog.
In the end, it really depends on the blog’s niche and the personality of the blogger to choose which income model he or she will put more effort in.
Cheers!

Very interesting post.
I think it all depends on niche and how well the optimization is done. Darren’s digital photography school blog have Adsense and performs very well, but no Adsense on his problogger blog. Once he explained in his post why he doesn’t use Adsense on problogger.
Angel Cuala posted: 28 Nov at 11:04 pm
Ceblogger / Bloggista - Yes, I believe SEO is a must for Adsense. I think I need more of this somehow.
Fitz - Nice information. I think I am more of a Marketing Blogger. Although it is possible to be both, I think one must sacrifice a bit. Thanks for being here.
Mintblogger - I am a big fan of Darren Rowse, and I really admire him for being good in different worlds.

Wow Kuya Angel congrats for reaching your $100 thru Adsense!
As for me, I may concentrate first on building quality contents on my blog since I’ve just started a self-hosted blog 2 months ago. And from there, I will decide the advertisement tool that I will use. ^_^

Yeah, I never really got into adsense. I heard of some people getting banned and so on. I guess it depends on how bloggers are using it, if I come to a blog to find adsense rammed in my face, tacky! I’m gone, period.
Cheers,

Congrats Angel, way to go. I have earned only $17.60 for 7 months from adsense, (sniffles) Ang baba. But I earned a lot from writing for sites. I have earned $ 136 at helium alone for a period of more or less 3 months. And I could earn more if only I have more time. (May trabaho tayo pag araw). I also earn a little from trion.com and associated content.
You can earn more from your helium. Why don’t you post your blog posts there. Once you posted them there, it will be a source of passive income for you. My 100 plus articles is fast earning cents for me, almost a dollar a day, without me doing anything for those already published articles. I just posted the widget and that’s it. The passive earnings will also be for life. As long as the internet is there, and someone views your articles, you will get paid and you could even pass this on to your children too.
Good luck and all the best.

Came from bloggista.com and got curious about your blog name and comments. Glad I followed you here - looks like a very interesting site. I am 52yrs old, new to this blogging thing. I have no blog yet - but you guys inspire me to start one soon.

Ambo - You’re quite luckier than me in terms of Adsense and yes, I need to learn more of SEO.
Snow - I think two months is enough to wait. You got to decide, and I will send you a mail to help you decide.
Fatherlyours - I am not doing great. That’s why I am looking for more oppprtunities. Hopefully, what we have started will work.
Miguel - What a brave decision! But just like I said, Adsense is like any Money Making scheme that has its own risk.
Jena - Writing is also a good way, but it’s a slow earner. Besides the fact that we must be good in writing, it is very time consuming. I think that it’s not bad to use your writing talent to earn money, but I think we have to find other options too.
Bloggingnewbie - Welcome to the blogging world. I met Bloggista once, but we had a very good time together, and I can say that he is a good man and businessman as well. Thanks for appreciating my blog, and hope you start your blog soon.

me I so love adsense, it makes me happy every 27,28 or 29th of the month, LOL! like what most adsense fanatics would say, it doesn’t matter if your blog will look like an all GA banner thing (but of course 3 per page only) but what matters is the CTR you will get, LOL! and that’s were the money is.
Congrats Angel, 2nd paycheck will come easy unlike the first

Hi Angel,
Yup. I am using a different keyword (username) because I am into an SEO contest.
This is gary viray.
Whew! Google Adsense is real pain but it is I think a long term income generating channel when you start gaining from it.
Frankly, I don’t have much of it too however; when my dream comes true (working at home), I will certainly be tweaking everything in my blogs just to make good in Adsense (thinking about 5 figures/mo).
Keep the traffic coming as well as optimize your blogs with some high paying keywords (for CTR) and high traffic keywords in a balance or else your blog will only look like an MFA.
I hope you support me too… Busby SEO Test - http://www.garyviray.com.
lol. Just thinking out loud.
rock and roll!

Hello Angel,
Great that you will soon cross the line of the $100 Barrier.. Well I have tried lots of income possibilities in Blogging. Such as
1) Paid Post
2) Direct Links
3) Google Adsense
And I must say that Google Adsense rocks since it gives me passive income. I agree with Marhgil if your post is great and you already build a community of readers no matter how many your ads in your blog they will surely comeback.
or they will continuously monitor your blog thru RSS.

It’ s really painful at the start. On my experience, It took me several months to appreciate adsense.. Before, I thought that making relatively big money from adsense was just a plain hype.. but I was wrong.. Adsense really makes money.. But of course one should know the science of seo which is the sibling adsense.. The problem is, seo is not an exact science and it varies from time to time..
Anyway, congrats po for reaching your first 100.. ako din, I was so happy to receive my first check then..
