10 Ways on How to Avoid Child Obesity

A child is said to be obese if their weight is more than 20% higher than the ideal weight. Usually, these children have eating disorder habits. Unfortunately, none of the new medicines to treat obesity are approved for children or adolescents to use. They may affect your child’s growth and development, and the risk of dangerous complications is far greater than any benefit they might have.

However, parents can do some things to avoid their children to be obese. These may be simple, but requires a lot of determination and discipline. Here are some of them and hopefully, we can follow them.

1.0 Be the role model. Obese parents will tend to have obese children.

2.0 Be supportive. Children know if they are overweight and don’t need to be reminded or singled out. They need acceptance, encouragement and love.

3.0 Set guidelines for the amount of time your children can spend watching television or playing video games.

4.0 Plan family activities that involve exercise like go hiking or biking, wash the car, or walk around a mall or park. Offer choices and let your children decide.

5.0 Be sensitive. Find activities your children will enjoy that aren’t difficult or could cause embarrassment.

6.0 Eat meals together as a family and eat at the table, not in front of a television. Eat slowly and enjoy the food.

7.0 Don’t use food as a reward or punishment. Children should not be placed on restrictive diets, unless done so by a doctor (for medical reasons). Children need food for growth, development and energy.

8.0 Involve your children in meal planning and grocery shopping. This helps them learn and gives them a role in the decision making.

9.0 Keep healthy snacks on hand. Good options include fresh, frozen, or canned fruits and vegetables; low-fat cheese, yogurt or ice cream; frozen fruit juice bars; and cookies such as fig bars, graham crackers, gingersnaps or vanilla wafers.

10.0 Focus on small, gradual changes in eating and activity patterns. This helps form habits that can last a lifetime.

Lastly, it is always best to visit your doctor regularly.

Fat children may be cute, but not always healthy.

I certainly agree with this post. While, it’s cute to see a plump child in the streets, it’s quite challenging to look ‘fat’ for the oldies. But sometimes kasi talaga its in the genes eh… :(

Culture also has got to do with it. I was going to blame the Pinoy Culture ahahaha on “uyyy an taba mooo” if not for the uberly hot weather plus uber energetic Pinoys that’s why you don’t see much obesity there (or some “other” poor explanations? Hahaha) – which literally sheds all the fat hahaha!

Anyway, i have an article and I could not find it – in the US, it’s about food content – as this article claims – unfortunately I can’t find it. Essentially, as far as I remember with the article, the food content of American’s contributed greatly to the obesity in the country. Once i find it, i’ll post the link. It’s another one of those studies. Matagal na to kasi, kaya nawawala.

I also believe its more on the genes that’s why they become bigger. Parents should also see to it that their children are being checked. Take care!

Also letting your kids just play PSP or Gameboy the whole time and just watch TV, certainly, even if obesity is not in your genes, sooner you’ll see your kid as wide as your ref.

Funny thing is, when I was little until I started working, I tried all the ways to add myself a few pounds. But now when I’m 24 already, it’s hard to stay fit. :-) Hehe

  • Great article Angel. I agree that parents must set as an example. If parents are able to lose weight then the children will see that the whole effort is possible and can really lead to results. Happy holidays!
