Dengue Fever and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever – Symptoms and Treatment

Last time, I shared to you how Dengue fever hurt my daughter and almost killed my wife. After more than one week in the hospital, she managed to cheat death through the financial support and prayers by fellow Filipino bloggers. My wife had not yet fully recovered, and still taking some medication and a lot of rest at home. Again, I am thanking all those who supported us all the way up to this date.

But while I am really grateful to all of you, I think it is also my responsibility to share what I have learned about this killer disease. By doing so, I am hopeful that more people especially parents will take extra careful. Note that Dengue fever can harm anyone, rich and poor, young and old.

Dengue fever starts with a high fever, which usually reached 40°C. This will be followed by severe headache and muscle pain. So once you or your love ones are encountering this, don’t think twice and rush to the nearest hospital immediately. This disease is not contagious and therefore, there’s no way it can be transferred from one person to another, not unless one will be bitten by mosquito carrying this virus. It can only be diagnose through a blood test, and only after a few days.

Unfortunately, there’s no specific treatment but to intake a lot of fluids and take a lot of rest. However, it is best that you clean your house at once and remove all stagnant water to eliminate all mosquito breeding areas. Since my daughter was treated at once, it did not result to Dengue hemorrhagic fever. This type of Dengue fever (DHF) was the culprit that caused my wife to undergo two blood transfusions. My wife was complaining about severe abdominal pain.

The best prevention we can do so far is to be aware of our surroundings, not only within our neighborhood but also the places we visit. This includes bus terminals, streets, and the like. If possible, wear long sleeves and apply mosquito repellent to your skin and clothes. But I read from a blog post comment that a herbal medicine called Tawa-Tawa is believed to be effective to cure Dengue fever. Here is a post from the Cure Library that can explain about it further. My neighbor gave me one when we got out from the hospital.

Hi, there! I wrote about you on my blog, too, that day that you needed help. That was also the time that my son just got out form the hospital for dengue. Like you, it was also the scariest experience in my life! I wrote about it, too, and I wish DOH would really do something about eradicating this disease. Better yet, killing these dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

I continue to pray that your wife will fully recover soon. You all take care!
