Choosing a College Course in Times of Crisis

It cannot be denied that the world crisis is now being felt by almost all of us and according to experts; this can be just the beginning and the worst is yet to come. Whether you are parent or a high school student who will graduate this coming March, choosing a college course seems to be scary in this time of crisis. Colleges and universities are now inclined to a bigger tuition fee increase.

Local student groups are now waiting for the result, while Commission on Higher Education (CHED) is still talking (requesting, rather) with different regional school directors – public and private. But of course, this is not the only problem. It is also the question of what college course should this freshmen take.

Then after college, it is not the question of landing on a good job position but rather the chance of having a job at all. While it is true that online job searching is getting more popular, jobseekers are also increasing rapidly. With the current situation that a lot of employers are reducing manpower to sustain their companies, these unemployed individuals are additional competitors in the job market. Not to mention, there will be another batch of college graduates next year who will join the unemployed industry.

Now, what college courses should these high school graduating students take? First, they should grab the chance of learning more online. Instead of chatting in social sites talking about nonsense, they can view some tutorials that interest them. They should choose a college course that can lead to a business venture in the future, instead of being employed for the rest of their lives. A two-year vocational course is also a good choice these days, as technical people are now more in demand.

As parents, it is also our responsibility to guide them. Although our children may already have chosen a career path, it is still best that they receive solid advises from us. But don’t force them to take college courses that they never imagine, as it may only worsen the situation. After all, what is hot today may be cold tomorrow. Anything can happen these days, you know. We must always bear in mind that it is their future that is at stake, not ours.

    another great post Sir Angel!

nice to see you back to posting insightful articles…

and if I may add, instead of seeking for a job, graduates are being encouraged to take the entrepreneurial path ;)

I agree that we should all know how to build and manage our own business, so we can have more sources of income.

Just want to share your this line from a song that I like. “Whether you broke or rich, you gotta get biz.”

an enlightening one, though at this point most of the graduating students have already made a decision with their parents, since college entrance tests have been taken in the last 2 quarters of 2008. the major colleges and universities have already announced the passers.

it is now a matter for the seniors to decide which school and which course that they passed they will go to.

it is now the juniors’ time to contemplate on this with their parents–because by summer they will be taking review lessons, then by school opening, filling out forms for college entrance tests.

It’s my first time here, found your blog through Buraot’s epalicious linkage…
I must say you have a very interesting blog and great enlightening posts.
Actually, I’m a graduating student, and though I already have a Job and another prospect job in my line of education, still I am aware that most of the graduates this year will have to face the world of unemployment.
I guess the new batch of high school grads should think practical, and not take courses that they just want, rather what’s in demand in the job market right now.

Sexy Mom – Yes, I agree. This post maybe a quite late but I hope this still can enlightened them just like you mentioned. Thanks for being here!

Basti – Actually, it’s not bad to be practical these days. But still, we have to balance everything so we will not be blaming ourselves later for the wrong decisions we make.

It feels good to have you here for the first time. I hope you’ll drop by again.

i think that the most in demand now are the BS Accountancy graduates. Schools had become strict and standards are upped because of the CPA board exam standards. Then there are the BPOs and shared services companies. Add to that the local companies hiring accounting graduates.

  • Still the best idea is to choose something that intersets you. Becuase choosing a course just to “make lots of money in the future” will make you miserable.
