How to Teach your Child Deal with Failure

Who among you do not know about the greatest NBA player of all time, Michael Jordan? But who among you know that he missed 9,000 shots and lost 300 games? This means that failure is inevitable even to the best of the best.

Therefore, it is very important for us parents to teach our children how to deal with it. Failure can cause a big effect while they are growing. It can drive people crazy, and sometimes lead to suicide. Now, the question is how to do it. Here are the factors of dealing with failure, and how parents can help.

Acceptance

This is the hardest part, I should say. Even adults find it hard especially when they know they did their best to succeed, but still did not make it. For children, the immediate escape is to cry and look for a shoulder to cry on. It is very important that we are present when they fail, either in exams or loosing a game or even for a simple activity.

If you cannot be available, just make sure that you’re among the first to know and this is only possible if you have an open relationship with your child. So if you’re not, you better start now.

Assessment

What have I done wrong? Why am I not chosen? These are only some of the questions your child will ask you, and you should be ready to answer without hurting his feelings. Help him assess the situation, and lay down all the possible reasons why he fail. If there were mistakes on his part, never put the blame on him. Instead, guide him and share some tips on how he can avoid repeating the same mistakes. If you think he did his best, make him feel proud about it. Reaching for a star takes patience and timing.

Encouragement

Your child may wonder if he should try again. As a parent, you should be able to encourage him to do so. However this time, make sure he is more prepared than before and willing to accept failure. But If your child decides to make another path, just support him all the way. The important thing is his self-confidence was not lost. After all, failing in one aspect does not mean your child is not good. Some things that are not really meant to be.

To sum them up, failure is something we should not be afraid of. It’s something that we can use as an inspiration to work harder next time. As a parent, we should prepare our children as early as possible. When they grow up, we can be at peace as they face the challenges of the real world.

it is basically the role of parents to teach their children of how to deal and cope with failures. not really maybe the spood feeding lecture type, but letting your children live with the fact that they are not superhumans and during times of failure, be sure to be there to help them process their experience and cheer for them to stand up once again.

  • Giving advice to children and correcting them in there mistake is the best way to grow your child.Very great advices you have in there…:)
