How to Promote a Blog for Beginners: Part Three
Welcome to Part Three and the final chapter on how to promote a blog for beginners post series, and I think this is the most important part. But before we proceed, let me give you a recap on the previous parts.
In Part One, I discussed a bit about the principles of SEO, submitting articles to article directories, and some ways on how to start meeting fellow fellow bloggers. On the other hand, Part Two focused on being sociable as a blogger to promote a blog. The first two parts therefore, focus on spending time away from your blog. Although all of them are effective, but its success will still depend on you.
Here in Part Three, I will discuss on how to promote a blog without going elsewhere but only on your blog. Therefore, this post will focus on how you can manage your blog and use it as a promotion tool itself. If you are about to start a blog or have just started one, I believe the tips below can help you somehow.
Blog URL
The shorter your blog URL is, the better. If your blog URL is very long, chances are your friends will misspelled it and they might be directed to another blog. The same effect may also happen if you include a dash in between keywords, on it, although it may help search engines to identify them. On the other hand, using your name as your blog URL is fine, especially if you want your name to be popular. However, this might endanger your privacy and you will be prone to identity theft. Even the ever popular John Chow admits that he should have used a more business type URL for his blog. Using keywords related to your blog topic is definitely a great advantage, since people will not forget it easily.
Blog name and tagline
Having your blog name the same as your blog URL is a very wise decision, and using also keywords related to your blog topic will be very helpful. On the other hand, tagline is a short phrase that will describe more or less on what visitors will expect to see. Using a very attractive tagline is very important especially if you decide to use your name as your blog URL and blog name as well. I am pretty sure the tagline from advertisements of some consumer products caught your attention, don’t they?
Blog theme
I have seen a lot of bloggers with attractive Twitter background, but their blog themes slightly look better than garbage. You must realize that blog visitors are like house guests, and you don’t want to show them a dirty house, do you? Therefore, choose a blog theme that’s not only attractive to your eyes but also to others. I strongly suggest that you show your blog theme to your friends first before finally using it. Then, be open to suggestions. There are a lot of choices out there, and I am pretty sure that there is one suited for you.
Post titles
Post titles with 6 to 8 words are good enough, and they should be in form of a phrase instead of a sentence. You should not end them with period, although you can use a question mark. However, ending them with an exclamation point is not really advisable. Be sure also that they have the most appropriate keywords, not only for the search engines but also for your visitors as well. Remember that the post title itself must attract people to visit your blog.
Post length
A 300-word post can be good enough, although shorter ones are also fine. But then, your readers might not be satisfied with your content if it will be less than 200 words. Of course, you can also make a post with 500 words or more like this one. However, be sure that readers will be bored. Using sub-titles will be a very big help to guide your readers. Nevertheless, don’t be repetitive in your content just to make your post long. If you think you have a lot of ideas to share for that topic, you can make a series post like I did here. The more important thing is readers understand what you really want to share.
Posting frequency
If you are entirely new in blogging, I suggest that you make at least 5 posts before you promote your blog. This is for the readers to have ideas on your writing technique, and where your blog topic will lead to. Posting daily may require you to be very busy, not unless you have prepared some advance posts. Having a very few posts a month might drive your visitors away since some of them do not want to read old posts. But then, posting frequency depend on your capability and time. Nevertheless, timing should also be considered as I gave an example on my previous post entitled Blogging Tip: Do not Publish your Killer Post tomorrow.
Images and videos
Adding images to attract your visitors are fine, but make sure they don’t distract your readers. Just make sure to link back to the originator, or better yet ask permission first before using them. Likewise, helpful videos are advisable if you making tutorial posts. However, remember that the first 5 seconds of visitors are very important, and too many images and videos may make your blog slower to load. In any case, you may check your loading time before adding something that might make your blog slow.
Blog about interesting news and fellow bloggers
People always like hot and interesting news, and posting some of them is a good idea. However, the effect on attracting visitors may only be only short time. Furthermore, you can also expect tons of bloggers writing about the same news. Mentioning fellow bloggers on your post means you are also promoting them. Therefore, time may come that they will also do the same thing to you. In both cases, don’t forget to put a link back to your source of news and to the blogs you mentioned. Some of them allow backtrack to be showed, which means that their readers might also visit your blog.
Create ageless posts
The effect of ageless posts is everlasting, since they are applicable to all seasons and generations. Although they may not be hot sometimes, you can expect that they still look fresh especially those who really need them. Moreover, you can make a related post about them and include a link as your reference posts. Interlinking your posts are helpful in promoting your blog especially if you are applying SEO, since search engines are attracted to relevant links and keywords.
Be a smart blogger
For obvious reasons, you should also proofread your posts before you publish them. On my very first guest post entitled The Effects of Good Article Writing which was published on Blogging Tips dot Com, I mentioned the importance of a well-written article and how it will affect you as a blogger. However, be a smart blogger rather than an intelligent writer. Remember that there are already millions of blogs out there, and you should be unique and competitive. Otherwise, your effort on promoting your blog will be wasted.
Before I finally end this post series, here is a short list of top bloggers in which I am very sure you can learn a lot more ways on how to promote your blog. Honestly speaking, I also consider them as my unseen mentors.
