Blog Action Day on Climate Change: How our Children can Help

Today is Blog Action Day 2009, and this year’s topic is about the growing problem about Climate Change. Last year, I also participated wherein the topic was about Poverty.

Anyway, the problem with climate change has been addressed around the world. Different projects were organized with the help of each concerned government and civilians as well. But as a parent, I think that we should understand how our children can help. After all, it’s their future that is at stake.

Parents should start educating their children as early as possible, and they can start at home. There are very simple activities in which their child can contribute to reduce the effect of climate change. If our children can learn early, they will get used to it and will apply what they learn until they grow up.

For example, you can teach them how to conserve energy by letting them turn off the unnecessary lights or when you leave the house together with the whole family. Furthermore, you can also advise them not to watch TV during meal time. You can also teach them how to conserve water and closing the the faucet while brushing their teeth is a simple example.

It will be a big help if you have separate trash cans for different waste so that they will learn how to segregate them. Instead of just putting labels on them, you can put a color coding to make them more attractive and easy to recognize. Similarly, you can teach them the difference between the biodegradable and degradable items.

You can also teach them how to plant trees especially if your backyard is wide enough. If they have the same activities in their school, allow them to support the project and share some ideas on how they can help more. Likewise, teach them how to love nature in general.

Finally, let them hear the news about the effect of climate change and tell them to spread it to their friends and classmates. Let them watch the news on TV, and explain to them clearly why such calamities are happening.

Meanwhile, below is helpful video that you can show to your children so that they can be more aware about climate change.

As a parent, it is our obligation to teach our children how they can help reduce the effect of climate change. However, we should be creative and influential so that they will appreciate what they are doing. But we should act now because time is running out. Let us do it not only for our children but also for our children’s children.
