How to Vote Wisely this coming Philippine Automated Election 2010

I would like to reserve this post to make a call to all my fellow Filipino countrymen. The Philippine Automated Election 2010 is fast approaching, and yesterday was the start for the candidates to file their Certificate of Candidacy (COC). Unfortunately, the nuisance candidates were the first ones who went to COMELEC. But of course, we have already seen infomercials of some presidential candidates and it is pretty obvious that they are already campaigning.

I have been a registered voter since the Marcos regime and I have been voting in all the past elections. As a Filipino, I believe that we should be aware about the latest Election 2010 update. But more importantly, we should know how to vote wisely. With this, I know I have learned enough about the dirt in politics and how it differs from political will. Here are some of my personal opinions.

First of all, we must know well enough all the candidates especially for the presidential and vice presidential slots. We should know their complete profile, political history, and their businesses. Scrutinize each detail about them, especially how they reached their present status. However, I don’t suggest to judge them according to their personal choices in life. To me, it does not really matter if a candidate has many wives or has no wife at all. What matters to me is how loves his family as a whole, as I believe this will be their greatest asset that will prove they really love our country.

Second, we should know his platform of government since this will be his tool to help our economy grow. I strongly suggest that we listen to their speech during the campaign, although we can expect some entertainment to attract the audience. These days, there are already interactive ways to communicate with these candidates and we must grab the chance to ask them. Take note that this is not a popularity contest, and having many allies and followers does not necessarily mean they can be a good public servant someday. To me, heroism is not hereditary but everyone of us can be a hero in our little way. Likewise, bringing pride and honor to our country is not a guarantee that one can be a good legislator. In the end, it is what he will do and how he will do it.

Third, I believe we should also observe his campaign strategy. Eagerness to win may not be the same as eagerness to serve. Lately, there are a lot of politicians who switched from one political party to another and we will expect the numbers to increase. You should know who they are and how many times they have been doing this every election. We should understand that these candidates are spending millions (or even billions) of pesos, and it is interesting to know if they really want to serve our country. If one has a lot of money, it is very easy to help others. But the question is, what will be the exchange of all this help? Therefore, we should be cautious of candidates who keep using the poor in their campaign since some of them might be taking advantage.

In my opinion, poverty is only an effect of a deeper problem. Many OFWs went back home because they already have saved some money. But since there were only a few opportunities and they lack skills to enter into a business, they easily get bankrupt and work abroad again. Unemployment is not the real cause why Filipinos leave their families to work abroad, but rather the opportunity to make money. I therefore believe that the next government should add more focus on entrepreneurship among simple citizens.

On the other hand, crimes which include corruption seem to be an endless problem. But I suppose that if the law is strictly being implemented, then these law rapists will be afraid and less crimes will occur. Unfortunately, even the rich ones can hardly afford justice these days. Therefore, I think that we should choose a candidate who can wear an iron fist if needed but capable of balancing the equation before making a decision.

To sum them up, we should not vote a candidate because of his favorite color, or because a lot of showbiz people support him. We should be watchful when they mention about political will and hope because they might not even understand the term. Yes, we need a new change but a change for the better but we cannot achieve this alone. Yes, we need a skilled and intelligent president but he should also be trustworthy.

Choosing a candidate is not as easy as ABC, so therefore we should vote wisely.

Apparently, this will be our first time to have an automated election and we should also know how to use these automated voting machines. We may find a How to Vote Quick Guide video in the Internet, but I hope COMELEC will educate us more until the election day comes.

In addition, we must memorize our precinct number so that we can vote easily. If you want to confirm your registration, here is a post that will lead on How to Verify Online.
