Parents: How do you Call your Children?
When we learned that we are going to be a parent, it is the most exciting day of our life. Another child will be born and we start to dream on how he will look like. One of the first things that we wonder is the gender. Afterward, we start choosing a name and we select the best one for us.
When a child can already understand, some parents use cute nicknames until they got used to it. But when the child becomes stubborn or when his parents are not in a good mood, children are now being called with different names. This brings me ask my fellow parents. How do you call your children?
Unfortunately, some parents use nasty names to call their children they are doing bad things. Although it is just fine to discipline them, I don’t think it is proper to call them such names. This will not only degrade them but also showing disrespect in which ironically parents should be the ones teaching them.
On the other hand, I am wondering why parents call their children by their names. Parents would not want their children to call them by their names, right? If we’re calling our father, we use Papa, Dad, or whatever they taught us since we were kids. The same thing goes with our mother. So what am I trying to tell here?
Well, I seldom call my children by their names not unless I am trying to emphasize something. Most of the time, I call them Anak. This is a Tagalog word which means child in general. So whether it is a son or a daughter, we call them anak in Filipino. I am not just sure if every Filipino parent call their children Anak, but I think they should.
Apparently, I see some English films where a young boy is being called son especially the scene is drama . But then, I wonder why I don’t hear anyone calling her daughters as daughter. Have you ever heard one?
Anyway, I think calling them Anak is a sign of love and like telling them that you are proud to be his or her parent.
What do you think?
