How to Keep our Kids Safe and Healthy this Christmas
Two days from now, and it is Christmas day again. As they say, Christmas is a day to reunite with family and for children to enjoy. Here in the Philippines, Christmas is being celebrated as early as September. Christmas songs can already be heard while preparation for the Christmas party is already getting started. At the same time, families have their own plans too.
Meanwhile, let us not be overwhelmed with the celebration. As parents, let us not forget that our kids highly depend on us. Although we may be very busy, we should know how to keep our kids safe and healthy this Christmas. Here are some simple reminders.
Choose the toys you give to them
Make sure that it will not hurt them or anyone. I really do not suggest to give toy guns and swords to little boys, as there are other gifts that that can teach them how to be a hero. On the other hand, toys are categorized according to age group not only for their brain development but also for their safety. They do not need to be expensive though, but rather enjoyable and educational. If you think the toy does not fit him but he keeps on insisting, you should know how to say No.
Give them healthy foods
I know most of us will have a big celebration on Noche Buena on Christmas eve, and you have prepared for this for quite some time. But while adults should be conscious on what they do, the same thing also goes with children. Avoid too much junk foods, and choose the food you serve to them. Some of them may receive money from their Ninong and Ninang (Godparents), but you should be watchful in what they buy. If you will eat outside, you should observe the cleanliness of the place and not just because it is popular to kids.
Keep your kids safe outside your house
Most of us may be visiting malls and carnivals together with their kids. But while you and your kids are enjoying, you should be aware about their safety. Such places are overcrowded and your kids might get lost. When my boy was younger, we put a small note on his pocket with his name, our cell phone number and home address on it when going to malls. If your kids can already communicate well enough, tell him where you should meet in case he got lost. You should also know the nearest information center, as well as fire exit in case of emergency.
Finally, it is always best to use our parents instinct rather than depend on someone else to keep our kids safe and healthy. After all, this is our main responsibility.
