Free online games for children and adults alike are selling like candies on the Internet, and I am not against them.
In fact, I allow my children to play them as long as I check the site first and choose the games they play, especially for my 9-year old boy.
But of course, I do not tolerate long playing time as I still prefer him running outside and play with his friends with real toys. I know that playing outside will improve his social behavior more, as well as his physical strength.
