We are seeing the effect of Ondoy for about a week now, from TV news to social networking sites. As of this moment, more than 240 were confirmed dead and damages worth to almost 2.7 billion pesos. The Philippine government and private organizations are continuously distributing relief goods, and other nations are also extending their help. Unfortunately, there are still those who were not yet being reached by relief operation.

Their health is also now at stake especially children, as evacuation centers are getting more overcrowded. It is also sad to know that there are angry victims and are now battling for food, which means the effect of Ondoy is getting worst. While all of us now may be willing to help, donations are not just enough. When the Father is not a Good Provider

After 26 long years, I never imagine myself going back to my very first job. Sad to say, I am a street vendor again. Who would think that I finished a degree in Engineering, passed the board exam, and worked for different companies for 16 years? It is just unfortunate that I am still having a hard to find a job, considering that I started searching 7 months ago. Well, I think the nearest answer is that employers prefer younger applicants plus the fact that it is really difficult to find a job these days.

I am now selling toys balloons in the busy streets of Tanauan and Lipa City, Batangas, and I do not consider myself now as a good provider. As a father, it worries me more than it hurts my pride. I don’t have anything against street vendors, but I wish I can find a better source of income. Anyway, I know there are other fathers like me and maybe even worst. Unfortunately, I am seeing negative attitudes by some of them. Well, this post is for them and hope they will find this useful. Read the rest of this entry »

Angel Cuala for President?

First of all, preparing to run for president of the Philippines in 2010 is not what’s keeping me from blogging for more than a month. There were just so many things that I should attend to, and they cannot wait.

Anyway, my daughter’s nickname is also Angel who happens to be nominated as class president in her high school freshman class. Although I have never been elected as a class officer during my school days, I know how hard is to be one. So when my daughter told me about this, we talked about it seriously and here are some of my advises. Read the rest of this entry »

Christmas: Family and Fatherhood

Christmas is being celebrated today by Christians and families worldwide. According to the Bible, Mary had no other place to give birth, after Joseph cannot find an inn to stay for his family. So Mary had no choice but to give birth on a manger, to her son Jesus. Then, an angel spread the good news to the shepherds of Bethlehem. Later, three wise men came to offer gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

As time goes on, there were debates as to when Christians should celebrate it. Centuries later, different countries created different traditions on how to celebrate it. Then, a symbol of gift giving was established through Santa Claus. But what does Christmas really means? How does it affect the present world and the future generation? Read the rest of this entry »

Father keeps Faith after losing his Family in Jet Crash

“Please pray for him not to suffer from this accident.”

This was the humble statement of Dong Yun Yoon for the pilot who accidentally crashed his F/A-18D jet on Yoon’s house at San Diego, California last December 8, 2008. Unfortunately, the accident caused Yoon’s family to die while they were inside the burning house.

The family includes Yoon’s wife, two daughters (Grace, 15 months old; and Rachel who is less than 2 months old), and his 60-year old mother in-law.

The family just moved in to the neighborhood less than 2 months ago. Yoon however, is a Korean migrate since 1989, as told to reporters by Daniel Shin, Yoon’s minister.

Witnesses say they saw the jet flying on a low altitude and turning around just like in the movie Top Gun. Read the rest of this entry »

Just recently, a 19-year old MySpace member committed suicide during a live self-broadcast on a certain forum. He even left a suicide note, which is now being posted on forums such as here and here. This news was confirmed true, and the case is now considered close. But for us who are still living, the tendency of a similar case is always possible.

Any family member can commit suicide anytime, and this phenomenon is somehow unpredictable. The decision does not consider age, sex, race and religion. Family against Poverty: Blog Action Day 2008

I would like to reserve this post as my small but sincere contribution to Blog Action Day 2008, and poverty as the main topic. This event is now being joined by thousands of bloggers, organizations, and business sectors around the globe. Here is my share and hopefully, it can help.

Poverty is a deadly disease that no one has provided the best solution yet, although some of us got close to it. Not that there is none, but it seems that the medication being given is only first aid, as doctors would call it. Social groups, wealthy businessmen and concerned citizens are going hand in hand but in effect, the source of the virus is not being attacked. In fact, I do not even believe that giving money to the poor is the better approach.

I should know, simply because I have been there! I started to earn a living at the age of 10, and was force to stop during High Shool for three consecutive years due to severe poverty. I do not need to mention more details here since anyone can easily find them at my About Me page and Interviews. Read the rest of this entry »
